(Ecofin Agency) – The long-awaited Open Skies agreement between the United States and Nigeria is finally becoming a reality, 24 years after its initial signing. This landmark deal aims to boost bilateral air travel and economic ties between the two nations.
The US Embassy in Nigeria announced over the weekend that the agreement originally signed nearly a quarter of a century ago, is now entering its implementation phase. The Open Skies agreement allows for unlimited flight capacity and frequency, open route rights, liberal charter regimes, and open code-sharing opportunities.
Aligned with the US’s international aviation policy, the agreement represents a significant step toward the liberalization of civil aviation between the US and Nigeria. Its implementation is expected to strengthen economic and commercial relations, fostering the growth of air travel, tourism, and business.
A spokesperson from the US Embassy explained that this bilateral deal will enhance people-to-people ties and create new opportunities for airlines, travel agencies, and customers. It will minimize US government interference and maximize operational flexibility for airlines, fostering a competitive and consumer-friendly air travel environment between the US and Nigeria.
In addition to Nigeria, the US has established similar agreements with several other African countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya.
