UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women Kenya’s Strategic Note (SN) 2023-2026 envisions a state where gender relations empower women and men to make informed decisions, have equal access to and use of quality services, and control resources and assets in a secure, accountable, and inclusive nation. The Strategic Note has prioritized the following four impact areas: 1) Women leadership in decision making, 2) Women’s Economic Empowerment, 3) Ending Violence against Women and Girls and 4) and Women, Peace and Security. The SN’s priorities are fully aligned to national priorities, the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and the Global UN Women Strategic Plan (SP).
The Women, Peace and Security (WPS), Humanitarian and Disaster Risk Reduction(DRR) programme in Kenya Country Office is conceived and anchored within the framework of Kenya National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325, the commitments of the World Humanitarian Summit, Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The programme embodies the “Leave No One Behind” principle, by ensuring the inclusion of women, youth and other marginalized groups in peace, security and humanitarian initiatives. The Programme focuses on two key areas; a) Development and implementation of gender responsive polices and frameworks on peace and security and DRR; and b) Women and girls have access to DRR and humanitarian services.
In 2020 UN Women supported the Government of Kenya on developing its second-generation National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325 (KNAP II). The programme “prioritizes the implementation of Kenya’s Second National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325, (Pillar Participation, Protection, Prevention and Relief and Recovery), including integrating gender in the prevention and countering of violent extremism (PCVE). It seeks to promotes inclusivity, cohesiveness, localizations, and resilience.
As part of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS), Humanitarian and Disaster Risk Reduction(DRR) programme, UN Women with support from the Government of Japan will be implementing a 2-year Project on “Enhancing Women’s Resilience in Refugee Camps and Host Communities” which is contextualized to the global LEAP (Leadership, Empowerment, Access & Protection in Crisis Response) Programme and will be implemented in Garissa county which hosts Dadaab Refugee Camp and Turkana County which hosts Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement.
Under the overall guidance of the Deputy Country Representative of, the Programme Analyst-Humanitarian Action is responsible for managing the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of the Country Office’s Women, Peace and Security, Humanitarian and Disaster Risk Reduction programme with special focus on the “Enhancing Women’s Resilience in Refugee Camps and Host Communities” project that will be implemented in Garissa and Turkana counites. The functions include providing technical support, overseeing, budget management, building partnerships and providing support in resource mobilization, and managing knowledge building efforts.
