UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality (GE) and gender mainstreaming translate into action globally. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts.

The Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare (MGCSW) is a fully pledged ministry with a mandate to promote gender equality and social protections for women, children and persons with disability amongst other vulnerable groups including guaranteeing human rights in the Republic of South Sudan. Similarly, the Ministry is responsible for formulation and implementation of policies and legislations for promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment in South Sudan.

UN Women and the National Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare in South Sudan, have developed a great partnership to promote gender equality through shared dialogue, advocacy, and cooperation programs. UN Women continues to support the National Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare in the Government of the Republic of South Sudan to achieve its mandate, in promoting gender equality, safeguarding the rights of women, children, persons with disability and other vulnerable groups. One key task within the Ministries mandate is to ensure that all government institutions, CSOs and private sector are gender sensitive and that they take into consideration the diverse needs of the population in the design, planning and implementation of annual work plans. That, the Ministry continues to ensure that diverse needs are also considered within monitoring and evaluation of policies, programs, plans and projects.

Some of the work that the Ministry of Gender Child and Social Welfare undertakes to achieve this includes; adoption of the National Gender Policy (2013) which upholds the government’s commitment to the principles of equality and human rights as enshrined in the TCSS 2011 as amended and in the R ARCSS (2018). To uphold the key objectives outlined in the National Gender Policy, the Ministry has established gender focal persons (GFPs) in line Ministries and Commissions, and the gender focal persons are tasked with the responsibilities of mainstreaming gender equality principles in their respective sectors. On-going trainings on gender, gender mainstreaming and gender responsive budgeting have also been conducted with the focal persons. 

                                                                                  

To further strengthen the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare deliver on its mandate, UN Women South Sudan would like to hire a National consultant, to provide the essential support and facilitation for the Ministry to efficiently review Gender Policy for the National Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare
