(Ecofin Agency) – Mobile phone operator Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) Plc has partnered with the Government of Malawi to provide free wireless Internet across the country. On November 9, 2020, TNM signed an agreement in that regard with the Public-Private Partnership Commission (PPPC). Access points will be deployed throughout the country, including in schools, libraries, hospitals, and markets.

Audrey Mwala, Head of PPPC, said this program called Digital Malawi Project has received 1.2 billion kwachas ($1.5 million) from the World Bank. The project’s deployment has already started. The wireless network is expected to be operational in 2021. Users will receive 120 megabytes of data daily.

Through the new network, TNM Plc will strengthen its wireless Internet connectivity in the country. The telecom company is already providing Wi-Fi to Malawians via the TNM Express Wi-Fi service, launched last October with Facebook.
