(Ecofin Agency) – US satellite operator GlobalStar has received authorization from the Kenyan telecom regulator to operate in the country.
With the addition of Kenya to its portfolio of operations, along with Brazil and Canada, GlobalStar (which currently operates a constellation of low earth orbit satellites for voice and data) is expected to cover an additional 300 million people with its satellite telecom services.
According to Jay Monroe (pictured), Executive Chairman of Globalstar, “each of these countries is a significant win for us because they represent important developments for our regulatory efforts – Kenya shows continued momentum in Africa, Brazil has the largest population and economy in South America and Canada is a step forward to a harmonized North American resource.”
The company’s entry into Kenya reflects its progressive expansion in Africa. It will now be present in seven African markets. “Botswana has been followed by six other African nations – South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Gabon, Rwanda, and, now most recently, Kenya. These countries have authorized Globalstar to provide terrestrial services without any power limitations,” Jay Monroe said.
