A Memorandum of Understanding between the Ghana Aviation Ministry and the International Freight Drone (IFD) organization has been signed to deploy freight drone technology to enable swift logistics services across the country.

The project follows a successful deployment of drone technology in the health sector by the Ghanaian government leading to further expansion plans in the aviation industry.

Fresh agricultural produce and finished goods industries are also expected to be primary beneficiaries of the initiative by enabling delivery services between producers, retailers, and end-users within a few minutes.

Plans are underway for the construction of drone ports in strategic locations around the country by IFD and it is expected that the freight drones will have the capacity to transport 10-tons of shipping containers over 700 kms.

Mr. Joseph Kofi Adda, the Minister of Aviation said, “In Particular, the use of drones will facilitate the rapid movement of cargo to unreachable areas of the country.

With Ghana now becoming the center of AfCFTA means there will be the need to move cargo through the Sub-region and other parts of the continent.” As the first West African Country, Ghana sets the pace for many other African nations seeking to introduce the freight drone industry to their country.
