(Ecofin Agency) – Gamtel is dealing with ongoing disruptions to its fiber optic network, which have been affecting its services. This year alone, the company has reported issues in April and May.
On September 12, NetBlocks, a British organization that monitors global internet freedom, reported disturbances on Gamtel’s network. The historical operator, Gamtel, announced a fiber optic break on the route between Serrekunda and Banjul.
According to NetBlocks, Gamtel’s internet connectivity is currently operating at just 25% of its usual level. Gamtel has stated that its technical team is working to restore service.
This is the third cable cut reported by Gamtel this year. The company has been struggling with the effects of these incidents, which are mainly caused by vandalism, impacting the availability and quality of its telecom services.
In April 2023, the Gambian government introduced a policy to protect fiber optic infrastructure in the country. The regulations include a minimum fine of 500,000 dalasis (about $7,000) for anyone who damages the national network.
