Ethiopia has reached a historic milestone in its coffee exports, setting new records in both volume and revenue during the current fiscal year. Coffee is the country’s main export and a key source of foreign exchange.
On May 14, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) reported that 354,302 tons of coffee were exported during the first ten months of the 2024/2025 fiscal year. This is a 70% increase compared to the 208,986 tons exported during the same period last year. It also surpasses the total volume for the full 2023/2024 fiscal year by 19%.
The sharp rise in volume led to a significant increase in revenue. Ethiopia earned $1.87 billion from coffee exports over the same period, a 30% gain from the $1.43 billion earned the previous year.
Adugna Debela, General Director of the ECTA, credited the growth to strong coordination across the coffee sector, including producers, cooperatives, exporters, and both regional and federal authorities.
With the fiscal year ending in June, officials remain confident about reaching the original revenue target of $2 billion, especially as Arabica coffee prices continue to rise. On May 14, Arabica futures traded at $3.7 per pound on the Intercontinental Exchange, up from $2.1 per pound on July 1, 2024.
Ethiopia is known for its exclusive production of Arabica coffee, prized for its high quality on the global market.
