(Ecofin Agency) – The Algerian government announced it will start a vaccination campaign against Covid-19 from next month. The announcement was made last Dec 20 by the president Abdelmadjid Tebboune (pictured) himself.
“I instructed the Prime Minister to chair without delay, a meeting with the Scientific Committee to monitor the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic, to choose the appropriate vaccine, and to launch the vaccination campaign in January 2021,” he said in a tweet. According to the Algerian authorities, the vaccine should be free for everyone in the country.
Other countries also announced they will start vaccination campaigns next year. In Africa, many countries have joined the WHO-led Covax initiative, which aims to provide up to 2 billion doses of new vaccines developed against the disease to poor countries by the end of 2021.
The Latest stats provided by the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that Algeria has so far recorded 95,203 confirmed cases of covid-19 (including the head of state himself), with 2,666 deaths and 63,260 recoveries.
