(Ecofin Agency) – Benin’s army neutralized 17 attackers in Banikoara, a town in the north of the country, during an assault on February 15, according to local media reports.
The attack led to an exchange of gunfire, resulting in the deaths of six Beninese soldiers. So far, no further details have been provided.
This marks the second attack in early 2025. The previous assault, on Wednesday, January 8, left 28 Beninese soldiers dead.
The rise in terrorist attacks in this West African nation could affect foreign investments and drive up security costs. In response, Benin has increased its defense budget by 18% for 2025, bringing it to approximately CFA118 billion ($188 million).
The government is ramping up security efforts. On January 22, 2025, Benin signed a security cooperation agreement with the United States to strengthen military interoperability, preparedness, and operational effectiveness between both nations.
