Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) has been working in Ethiopia since 1984. Its initial intervention was predominantly focused on famine relief through the provision of emergency health service assistance to people affected by famine. CPAR’s major humanitarian and emergency interventions were a supply of skilled personnel, medical supplies and materials for emergency, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and health services.

CPAR, in response to the “Partnerships for Her Voice, Her Choice” call for proposals by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), has developed a 4 years’ project proposal entitled “Enhancing Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights for Women and Adolescents” (ESWA). The project aims to improve women and adolescent girls reproductive, sexual health and rights by increasing awareness of and access to high quality gender-responsive and youth-friendly Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services in selected zones in the Amhara and Oromia Regional States. This project proposal has been selected and funded primarily by GAC. CPAR will implement the project in collaboration with various universities and local partners.  For this project, CPAR is seeking qualified candidates for different positions and locations

Principal Function: 

The Accountant is responsible for keeping proper records of books of accounts of CPAR-Ethiopia He/she is responsible for the receipt and disbursement of cash.

  • Detail Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the production of financial reports in accordance with CPAR-Ethiopia’s financial procedures and donor’s specification.
  • Assist or give advice on the work of staffs engaged in the analysis of financial transactions, keeping proper records and preparation of financial documents, etc.
  • Assists in the development of new methods and procedures, provides the necessary internal coordination and control for maintaining continuity and validity in the accounting system
  • Prepares for and facilitates audits. And takes periodic physical inventories of stocks
  • Answers inquiries verbally or in writing concerning accounting matters; corresponds with concerned persons and units.
  • Ensures the posting of accounting data to sub-ledgers and general ledger accounts from accounting records and documents; prepares financial reports and statements resulting from the ledgers of different Projects.
  • Verifies that expenditures are justified, properly made and signed, and charged to correct accounts.
  • Participates in the development of proper collections and disbursement of organizational funds.
  • Maintains Bank account register and periodically report on the status of fund
  • Informs superior of financial positions, inflows and outflows of cash; ensures the preparation of disbursement vouchers; maintains voucher register; prepares financial statement and reports.
  • Collects cash, gives changes and issue receipts as required.
  • Pays out cash, gives changes and issue receipts as required.
  • Prepares money for deposit at bank and arranges withdrawal.
  • Prepares wages and Paid salaries based on payroll.
  • Reconciles bank balance with records and assists in the preparation of bank reconciliation included the Program Area level.
  • Collects bank statement and prepare weekly exchange rates as per the bank information.
  • Processes all petty cash payments; summarizes expenditures when the cash float reaches the authorized replenishment limit and submits the summary with documents for replenishment.
  • Keeps records of amounts received and paid and reconciles cash balance with records.
  • Responsible for the planning and implementation purchasing functions of the various programs of CPAR-Ethiopia. In general, he/she ensures that the right items, with the right quantity, quality and other specifications, at the right price, time and place are always acquired and delivered.
  • Undertakes minor secretarial services for the division
  • Performs other related work as required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, financial management or related studies.
  • At least 4 year’s proven accounting software experience such as Quick Book, peach tree accounting or ACCPAC and IPSAS.
  • Good interpersonal skills and team working skills.
  • Knowledge of effective resource and property management skills.
  • Fluency in English
  • Excellent Communicator orally and in writing.
  • Innovative, self-driven and team player.
  • NGO working experiences, Knowledge of local language(s) and familiarity with the project places are advantageous.
