South African mobile network operator Rain has unveiled an ambitious product roadmap for 2025, aligning with the rollout of 5.5G technology, which promises to revolutionize mobile connectivity. The company plans to leverage 5.5G and artificial intelligence (AI) to launch new services and expand its market footprint.
“At Rain, we are well-positioned to take advantage of 5.5G and will continue investing in our 5G rollout throughout 2025,” the company told MyBroadband.
Since the rollout of 5G in South Africa began in 2020, led by operators like Vodacom and MTN, Rain has established itself as a leader in affordable fixed-wireless access services. By 2024, its RainOne package, combining fixed-5G services with mobile 4G SIMs, gained significant traction, providing seamless connectivity for users at home and on the move.
The integration of 5.5G and AI in 2025 is expected to enhance Rain’s competitiveness in South Africa’s evolving telecommunications market. By focusing on technological innovation and service expansion, the company aims to lead the shift to next-generation connectivity, bridging digital divides and improving internet access across the region.
Rain’s ongoing investment in advanced technologies reflects the growing demand for reliable data services in South Africa, driven by remote work, online education, and digital entertainment. These efforts position Rain as a pivotal player in shaping the country’s digital future.
According to The State of the ICT Sector Report in South Africa 2023, National 5G population coverage increased from 7.5% in 2021 to 20% in 2022. The increase in 5G population coverage lays a critical foundation for the adoption of 5.5G technology, which is expected to deliver significantly enhanced capabilities.
