Tanzania: World Mobile launches commercial telecom network in Zanzibar

0

(Ecofin Agency) – In 2021, World Mobile began preparations to roll out its mobile network in Zanzibar. In November of that year, the company deployed remote-controlled aerostatic balloons to serve as the backbone of the network.

World Mobile Group recently announced the launch of a blockchain-based commercial telecommunications network in Zanzibar. The company promises Zanzibaris a mobile data 50% cheaper than the national average.

Today marks a significant milestone for World Mobile as we proudly announce the successful commercial transition of our network in Zanzibar. We are thrilled to welcome our first paying customers and embark on a journey to connect the unconnected, empowering individuals across Africa and beyond,” said Micky Watkins, Founder, and CEO of World Mobile Group.

The network is launched some 17 months after World Mobile deployed internet balloons around the archipelago to serve as the backbone of its hybrid mobile network.

The initiative is part of World Mobile’s ambition to “connect the unconnected”. In November 2021, it signed a partnership agreement with Input-Output Global (IOG) and eGovernment Agency Zanzibar (eGAZ) to create long-term blockchain solutions and position the region as the global blockchain hub. To implement their projects, IOG and World Mobile raised nearly $40 million.

World Mobile’s network is expected to accelerate the coverage of broadband connectivity in Zanzibar, and Tanzania as a whole. According to the latest statistics from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), the country has 61.9 million cell phone subscribers and 33.1 million Internet users.
