(Ecofin Agency) – In a context marked by accelerated digital transformation, Egypt wants to make sure its residents have access to quality telecom services, therefore facilitating the achievement of its digital-based development ambitions.

Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has slammed a EGP24 million (US$989,751) fine on telecom operators. According to the regulator, the fined operators failed to meet the service quality required in Q3-2022, as indicated in a quality measurement report by the National Telecom Center for Monitoring Service Quality.

For voice services, Vodafone was below standard in 11 regions against 17 for Orange, 14 for Etisalat and 20 for WE (Telecom Egypt). The data services offered by Vodafone were below standard in 29 regions, against 14 for Orange, three for Etisalat, and 14 for Telecom Egypt.

The fine is part of the actions taken by NTRA to improve the telecom services provided to Egyptians amid an acceleration of digital transformation and high broadband demand in the country.

By improving the quality of telecom services provided to the population, it would contribute to the effective implementation of “Digital Egypt 2030,” the country’s digital transformation strategy.
